HR and Social Media

December 1, 2022

Social media has become integral to so many aspects of our daily lives, and integrating our working lives into the mix is a natural progression. In this day and age, organizations large and small need an online presence that not only promotes their brand, but also helps HR to efficiently recruit new hires and foster employee engagement. And it helps HR gauge public response to their organization as well.

Savvy HR professionals use not only employment-focused social media resources like LinkedIn to scout and recruit new talent, but they may also use social media to investigate reports of problems. For instance, looking at the social media of employees said to bad-mouth the organization, feign illness to get out of work, or bully coworkers online can provide information needed to take appropriate disciplinary action.

It’s important to keep abreast of any legislation in place to protect candidate and employee online privacy, such as prohibitions against requesting social media passwords. And check your organization’s social media policies for guidance. For instance, many companies prohibit employees from accessing company social media after they end their employment with the organization.
